What Your School District Isn’t Telling You

Let’s put it this way: we don’t recall many times when a school district reminded parents that they had the right to disagree with their district evaluations and suggest they obtain an Independent Educational Evaluation at district expense. It’s one of the most important rights you have. It costs the district hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars, and it’s a well-kept secret in many schools.

What You Can Do about It

You can’t get away with not understanding this protection. It is essential to your child’s future. The district is obligated to identify every child with a disability in the district, even if he doesn’t attend the public schools and never has. It has an obligation to determine if a child requires special education services. If so, the district must offer them. If services are accepted, the district must make sure that the services are provided and that the child receives a free and appropriate public education. Every year. Possibly through high school or early adulthood. And where did the process begin? With an evaluation! If you are concerned, exercise your right to an independent evaluation so that your child doesn’t lose years of needed, specialized instruction.
